











Stainless steel tank
Unlike ordinary steel, stainless steel does not stain, rust or corrode easily. Stainless steel tanks therefore have the ability to resist the formation of rust and stains. Stainless steel has this quality due to the presence of chromium which constitutes approximately 11% of the metal. The chromium delays the combination of water, pure iron and oxygen hence the formation of rust does not happen easily. Chromium acts by forming a thin layer when exposed to oxygen which blocks water and oxygen from going through. The thin layer is formed when the steel is exposed to mechanical or chemical damage. Therefore, the higher the percentage of chromium present in stainless steel, the more the resistance they have against rust and stain. This makes them suitable for use as beverage storage facilities and can be mounted outdoors.

Types of stainless steel:
1. Austenitic stainless steels – this is the most common type of steel. They are not hardened through heat treatment and can be welded. Part of their structure is made up of manganese, nickel and nitrogen.
2. Ferritic stainless steel – they cannot be welded and therefore are not widely used. They mainly contain chromium.
3. Martensitic stainless steel – are based on chromium but also contain some carbon. They are magnetic, and suitable for applications that require high levels of strength and a moderate degree of corrosion resistance. However, their weldability is low.
4. Duplex stainless steel – they contain proportional amounts of austenite and ferrite. They can be welded and can resist stress corrosion cracking.
5. Precipitation hardening stainless steel – these can be hardened using heat treatment. Presence of Copper, Niobium and Aluminum enhances their strength.
